Work For Your Beer is all about fitness, beer, and most importantly, community! We love highlighting members of Charlotte’s beer fitness community to shed some light on why they work for their beer (or ‘booch) and why you should join in the fun.

If you've attended Sip & Sweat at Lenny Boy, there's a good chance you've run into our regular, Samantha Glenn. She's the one with a smile on her face and a fire in her heart for some friendly competition.

Since moving back to Charlotte last May, she quickly fell in love with beer fitness and even thanks her mom for introducing her to Work For Your Beer!

Read on to learn more about Sam and why she'd encourage you to give beer fitness a try.

Name: Samantha Glenn

Age: 24

Occupation: Occupational Therapist (Just received my Masters Degree!)

Neighborhood in Charlotte: Currently South Charlotte but plan to move to either South End, Uptown, or Plaza/Elizabeth.

How did you first learn about Work For Your Beer?
Social Media. When I moved back to Charlotte after completing my masters didactic coursework, my mom sent me something via Instagram about Work for Your Beer thinking it would be a great way for  me to meet more people :) Thanks mom!

What made you want to be a part of the Work For Your Beer community?
Work For Your Beer is not just a workout group but is like a second family. Work For Your Beer takes part in 24 hours of Booty which supports people with cancer and I support them because my mom is breast cancer survivor. I love their philanthropy! I also enjoy participating in giveaways on Instagram and winning tickets to the Charlotte Checkers games or winning a brewery pint glass or t shirt! They keep it fun!

How long have you been attending fitness classes (in general)?
I was a competitive swimmer for most of my life. Once I hung up my suit, cap, and goggles, I sought out other forms of organized fitness. I attended numerous circuit training, HIIT, yoga, and pilates classes at the YMCA. During college and grad school, I began running with Sycamore Run Club and branching out to the other Work For Your Beer classes. Since moving back last May, I have pretty much gone to almost every Sip & Sweat class since.

Which brewery fitness classes do you attend?
Lenny Boy Sip & Sweat, Lenny Boy Run Club, Sycamore Run Club, Triple C Run Club, Sugar Creek Brewing and Unknown Brewing Bootcamps, and the occasional yoga session.

What motivates you to work out?
I want to look, feel, and be healthy. Running a 5K motivates me to run faster and work harder to keep getting better (I love competition!).

What made you start attending group fitness classes?
I was getting bored at the gym and being stuck in a “chest and back” and “abs and leg” day rut did not help. I wanted something different and something that offered variety. I wanted something that would help me meet people my own age and get me involved in the Charlotte community and the rest is history! I honestly do not know how anyone would pass up the opportunity to make friends, workout, and drink beer.

What is your favorite kind of group fitness class?
Something that is challenging, that will get my heart racing, and that will push me physically and mentally but also has a sprinkle of fun. I prefer circuit training or HIIT style classes but do enjoy yoga and pilates when I need to relax or want a good stretch.

What gets you excited to work out?
A great workout playlist!  What’s your go-to pump up song? There are way too many great pump-up songs to choose from but i’d have to go with Dirty Little Secret by All American Rejects as a throwback or Walk on Water by 30 Seconds to Mars.

What’s your favorite part of going to brewery fitness classes?
Meeting new people and seeing familiar faces, working hard, and having a celebratory drink for surviving Sip & Sweat or Sugar Creek Bootcamp!

Which brewery fitness class has been the most challenging for you?
Even though this is not a brewery, STAX bootcamp would definitely be the most challenging. I love the workout, the competitive nature on the field, the comradery, and the DOMS two days after but you are pushing your body to its limits while staying focused mentally in order to finish each exercise and finish as a team. If you are up for the challenge, I would say go check it out!

What’s one thing you would want to tell somebody who was considering attending a brewery fitness class?
Do it do it do it! It’s such a blast and the people you meet are great. If you are contemplating going… don’t over think it and just try it out. Not all classes are for everyone and not everyone likes beer but if you go, you will find that niche you belong to. These classes change up my routine and give me something to look forward to after each work day.

What’s your favorite beer in Charlotte?
Southern Girl Blonde Ale from Sycamore Brewery, Good Morning Vietnam from Wooden Robot, Raspberry White from Sugar Creek, and of course Ground Up Coffee Stout and the Lavenderade Kombucha from Lenny Boy :)

Why do you love Work For Your Beer?
The girls at Work for your Beer are so sweet and always very welcoming! They ask you about your week and what your plans are for the weekend and really try and get to know you. They make me smile from the moment I walk in and make me excited to be at the workout at 10 am on a Sunday rain, shine, or 30 degree weather. Justine helps me de-stress from the week and helps me set my goals for the following week and Mel is a great listener every time I we talk about something.
