How to DIY Beer Can-dles

Love candles and craft beer? Combine the two by making Beer Can-dles!

Supplies You’ll Need:

  • Empty beer can (top removed with a Draft Top)

  • Candle-making kit (this one from Amazon)

  • Double boiler or a heatproof bowl and pot

  • Protective gloves or oven mitts

  • Kitchen thermometer (optional but helpful)

  • Paper towels or newspaper (to catch drips)

Instructions:

1. Prep Your Beer Can

  • Use a Draft Top tool to safely remove the top of your beer can, creating a smooth, open edge.

  • Wash the can thoroughly and dry it completely to make sure no moisture interferes with your wax.

2. Set Up Your Wick

  • Grab a wick from your candle-making kit.

  • Use the adhesive sticker (included in most kits) to secure the wick to the bottom center of your can.

  • To keep the wick upright, you can use a wick holder or simply tie it to a pencil laid across the top of the can.

3. Melt the Wax (Double Boil Method)

  • Fill a small pot with about 2 inches of water and bring it to a gentle simmer.

  • Place your wax flakes into a heatproof bowl or a smaller pot that fits over the larger one without touching the water.

  • Stir occasionally as the wax melts, keeping an eye on the temperature if you're using a thermometer (ideal pouring temperature is usually around 160–180°F, but check your kit's directions).

4. Add Fragrance (Optional)

  • If your kit includes fragrance oils, add them once the wax is fully melted.

  • Stir thoroughly to evenly distribute the scent.

5. Pour the Wax

  • Carefully pour the melted wax into the prepared beer can, leaving about ½ inch of space at the top.

  • Make sure the wick stays centered as you pour.

  • If needed, re-adjust the wick so it's upright and straight.

6. Let It Cool

  • Allow the candle to cool undisturbed for several hours (typically about 4–6 hours).

  • As the wax sets, it might sink slightly around the wick. If that happens, you can reheat a little more wax and top it off.

7. Trim the Wick

  • Once fully cooled and set, trim the wick to about ¼ inch long.

8. Light and Enjoy!

  • Your beer can candle is ready to use!

  • Always burn your candle on a heat-safe surface and never leave it unattended.
